Digital Certificate

Digital Certificate

A Digital Certificate is an encrypted file or electronic password that proves the authenticity of an endpoint such as an individual entity, a device, or a server, through the use of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and cryptography technology. Digital certification by a trusted body assures the security of online communication and transaction, and empowers the use of Digital Signature.

Digital Certificates can only be issued by a licensed Certification Authority (CA) to the requesting individuals, organizations or websites. To apply for Digital Certificates, they provide the information to be validated by the Registration Authority and sent to CA, which signs it with a key that provides a chain of trust to the certificate. This enables the certificate to be used authentication to entity, document, or to provide proof of a website’s credential.

Using Digital Signature supported by the Digital Certificate, organizations can ensure that only trusted devices and users can connect to their networks, the sensitive data is protected from leak and transactions are secure against cyber threats. Not only that, an organization can also protect the integrity of their issued documents such as permits, certificates, agreements, and many more by applying the organization stamp or seal onto the document using Digital Signature. Individuals with Digital Certificates on the other hand will have verified digital fingerprints which protects them from identity theft or forgery, and prevent their signed documents to be tampered post-signing for malicious intention and fraudulent acts.
